1817 Mississippi became the 20th state
Jackson is the state capital and largest
city. Today, its catfish aquaculture
farms produce the majority of farm-raised
catfish consumed in the United States. The state symbol is the Magnolia
grandiflora tree. The latest data
shows that Mississippi has the highest teenage birth rate, that is more than 60
percent above the U.S. average.
