Born Charles
City County, Virginia; March 29, 1790 – January
18, 1862. He became president on the death of Harrison in April 1841. He was
also the first person to serve as President without ever being elected to that
office. The Constitution of the United States stated only that: "In Case
of the Removal of the President from Office, or of his Death, Resignation, or
Inability to discharge the Powers and Duties of the said Office, the same shall
devolve on the Vice President."
