1837 Michigan became the 26th state

Its capital is Lansing and the largest city is Detroit. The name Michigan is the French form of the Ojibwa word mishigamaa, meaning "large water" or "large lake". Michigan is, by tradition, known as "The Wolverine State," and the University of Michigan takes the wolverine as its mascot.
