1850 California became the 31st state

California is the most populous U.S. state. The capital city is Sacramento, the largest is Los Angeles. In 1848 began California Gold Rush when gold was found by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. The news of gold brought some 300,000 people to California from the rest of the United States and abroad.
